PALOS VERDES ESTATES
Malaga Cove (163)

Malaga Cove is the region along the northern most shoreline of Palos Verdes Estates from the Malaga Cove Triangle to Bluff Cove at the Margate border, and inland from the ocean bluffs up the hill to the area near La Venta Inn, and eastward to include the Palos Verdes Country Club.  This was the first area developed in Palos Verdes Estates and includes the famous ‘Malaga Cove Plaza’ commercial district modeled after the architecture of Bologna, Italy, replete with a replica statue of its ‘Neptune Fountain’. The Olmsted brothers (their father designed New York's Central Park) helped with the design of the Malaga Cove Plaza area and were responsible for much of the park-like feel of the city. Frank Olmsted Jr. built the first bluff top home in Palos Verdes, on Rosita Place. The historic Malaga Cove Library, as well as the Palos Verdes Police Department, city government offices, and county fire station are also located in Malaga Cove Plaza. Several wonderful recreation sites are also located in Malaga Cove as well.

Among the earliest developed sites, The La Venta Inn, was built in 1923 as the original sales office (la venta means the sale) for the original developer.  The Inn has long been a popular Wedding and party venue, boasting views of the coastline. In 1924 the Palos Verdes Golf Club opened at its location on the east side of Malaga Cove. It is semi-private and only property owners in Palos Verdes Estates can apply for membership. The waiting list for membership is long and the waiting period can be several years.  The recently restored and updated Mediterranean style clubhouse is open to the public for dining and special events. The private Palos Verdes Beach and Athletic Club is another favorite recreation spot. It is located on the beachfront adjacent to the beautiful, despite its nickname, “RAT” (Right After Torrance) Beach. On the other side of the club property sits the Neighborhood Church (formerly the Haggarty Mansion). Haggarty’s Point, just below the church, has been a favorite surfing spot on the Peninsula since the 1960’s.The Palos Verdes Tennis Club opened in 1963 with membership for Palos Verdes Estates residents also available. The city of Palos Verdes Estates owns the Palos Verdes Stables that offers lessons and summertime horse camps.

Malaga Cove has many beautifully landscaped parks as well as undeveloped expanses of coastline that can be enjoyed as a part of the city parkland system. Hikers can walk the bluffs and trails in the lower part of Malaga Cove to the west of PV Drive West. The rugged coastline provides enjoyment for surfing enthusiasts and tide pool observers.  A paved path from the bluffs reaches the shoreline and the tide pools. A trail adjacent to historic Malaga Cove School leads to the wide sandy “RAT” beach with County lifeguards and a bike trail that can be ridden as far north as Marina del Rey.

This activity-packed area is .66 square miles with approximately 1500 residents.  Malaga Cove homes have some of the most sought-after views in all of Southern California.  With much of this area on the hillside facing the Santa Monica Bay, many of the homes in Malaga Cove have breathtaking queens necklace views where the city lights meet the ocean.  On a clear day you can see the mountains beyond Malibu and San Nicholas Island off the coast. There are a variety of home styles within the Malaga Cove area, with most retaining some reference to Mediterranean architecture. The PVE Art Jury oversees the architectural integrity of the area.

There are a few opportunities for condo living around the Malaga Cove Plaza. This is the closest Palos Verdes neighborhood to the South Bay Beach Cities area, making Malaga Cove a convenient commute up the coast to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and many South Bay business districts.

The children of this neighborhood attend the Palos Verdes Peninsula School District schools of Montemalaga Elementary School and Palos Verdes Intermediate School. Palos Verdes students have a choice of attending either Palos Verdes High School or Palos Verdes Peninsula High School.

To live in this awesome area, you must be prepared to pay from $1,600,000 to $5,000,000 for a single family home and $500,000 to $750,000 for a Condo. Grand estates and bluff property can sell for much higher prices. Median price for the Malaga Cove Area 163 is $1,890,500.
